Microbial growth can occur wherever water accumulates in fuel tanks and systems. Very little water is required, and films of water less than 1 mm thick are sufficient to support microbial growth.
When strong microbial growth occurs, the quality of the fuel is affected and the fuel may not meet specifications. Microbial growth can also damage filter water separators and corrode fuel tanks, lines, and fuel system components.
Serious operational problems can occur if microbiologically contaminated fuel is loaded onto an aircraft, including fuel tank corrosion, clogged engine fuel filters, and failure of fuel quantity indication systems.
