Separator elements are used to create an effective water barrier as a second stage in filters/water separators. After leaving the coalescer, aviation fuel passes through the surface of the separator element, and water droplets are repelled by the hydrophobic surface of the separator. Water droplets settle in the sumps from the filter/water separator and are drained.
